update?
*compy D (the departmental laptop; not to be mistaken for compy I or compy II) is en route to being fixed by the math department's tech guy. apparently, with the most recent software update for mac os X.5 comes a neat little bug where whenever your laptop goes to sleep, it freezes. hopefully i can use that circlepacking program i wanted to use, which was the start of this whole thing. (need latest osX for latest java; need latest java for CirclePack and it *still* didn't work.) let's hope ken can work miracles.
EDIT: now my network preferences are borked and i can't get internet on the lappy. and, completely unrelated, NTC crapped out on me and i don't have internet at home.
*go figure that i'm completely useless most of the semester, and *now* all of my 1015 kids need me. i've had like no encounters with any of them (outside of the empo floor) all semester, and within the past 24 hours, 3 of them happen to have testing problems. 1 missed a deadline by 20 minutes b/c he got confused w/ the final exam deadline; another started the wrong exam; the last one is for whatever reason *completely* locked out of the testing system at the moment. wtf?
*i have tomato plant sproutlings in a pot on our balcony now. i usually suck at growing things, but i decided on a whim to throw some heirloom tomato seeds i kept from last summer's farmer's market in some dirt. (i normally don't like sliced tomatoes, but these were apparently tasty enough to me last year that i decided to keep some of the seeds.) i'm a little late on the planting season, but they're green right now and that's gotta count for something, right? i'm sorta wishing i'd planted them earlier, tho...there's all sorts of plant unfriendly pests that live around the house and i was gonna go home this weekend and stay for like a month. that means the options are to leave newly sprouted tomato plants around for like a month unattended (or, with the roomies who are generally busy/not around/have other things to worry about, which may as well be unattended), or to take them home with me for their hasty and unfortunate demise. :/ i guess i'll figure out what to do with them in a bit.
*got a phone call from kai yesterday that roughly started with "so, social services called me up to do this [pest control] inspection on this house..." there's no way that story can end well, y'know? to make a long story short, i've been recruited to help do post-treatment cleaning on this lady's house sometime in mid july. i've never been able to say that kai doesn't make life interesting. <3
off to check on compy and then study for the prelim. why can't i just shove the functional analysis book against my head and learn by osmosis?
